We recently started making home made chili sauce which has pretty much ruined all store bought chili sauces that we have ever had. It’s simple, easy and so much fun.
Below is the first recipe of a recent creation of ours and the first of what we have decided to call the Chili Ninja series.
Lekker soos n krekker
Translated in English Yummy like a firework
3 Cloves of garlic
12 birds eye chilies (Don’t remove the seeds)
2 Habanero chilies
1 ts fresh ginger
2 medium sized tomatoes
Juice of 2 lemons
Zest of 1 lemon
25 ml Whisky or Bourbon
1 ts pepper
Salt to taste
1 ts Paprika
1 ts dried chili
1 tbs Worcester sauce
1 tbs olive oil
1 tbs Apple cider vinegar or vinegar of choice
1 tbs Sugar
Chop onions, garlic, chilies and tomatoes and put in a bowl. Add lemon juice and lemon zest. Grate ginger and add to bowl. Put all ingredients in a food processor. (I used my Hello Kitty smoothy maker) 😀 And blend!
Once blended put in to a pot, add all other ingredients and cook for 20 minutes stirring frequently.
Let the sauce cool , put in a jar and enjoy!
This recipe makes 440 ml.
The chili sauce depending on ingredients, can last up to 3 – 4 weeks and sometimes even longer. Adding lemon juice or vinegar is key to getting the sauce to last. I have made chili sauce in the past where I didn’t use any vinegar or lemon juice, and it lasted roughly 2 weeks.
